Mini Cord Locks and Round Stays: Ultralight Hardware Fixes

Fix a slipping cord toggle or a bent pack stay with the right replacement part. Diagnose the symptom, choose the fix, and know when to stop.
Quick answer
Replace a cord lock when the spring no longer grips thin cord, and replace a round stay when it is bent, cracked, or missing. Both are simple swaps, but stop if the fabric around the stay sleeve is torn or the stay cannot be matched to your pack model.
Why small hardware fails first
Cord locks and stays take repeated stress that is easy to overlook. A cord lock compresses and releases hundreds of times per trip, while a stay flexes with every pack load. When either part wears out, the symptom often looks like a bigger pack problem: a drawcord that will not stay tight or a frame that feels uneven.
The fix is usually a direct replacement rather than a repair to the pack body. That keeps the job small and avoids unnecessary stitching or fabric work.
When replacement is not the right move
If the cord itself is frayed or stretched, a new lock may still slip. Inspect the cord before ordering hardware. Likewise, if the stay sleeve or surrounding fabric is torn, a new stay will not sit correctly and the pack needs a different repair.
For packs outside the listed compatibility, confirm the stay shape and length before trimming anything. A stay that is cut too short cannot be lengthened.
Diagnose the symptom before you replace
- Cord lock slips under load: Press the lock and watch the cord. If the spring does not close firmly on the cord, replace the lock. Confirm the cord is not frayed and is within the lock's stated size range. If a new lock still slips on new cord, the cord diameter is likely outside the lock's range.
- Cord lock is hard to press or sticks: A gritty or bent spring can make the lock stiff. Replace it rather than forcing it, especially if the shape no longer returns freely. Stiffness that continues after cleaning points to replacement, not repair.
- Pack stay is bent, cracked, or missing: Remove the stay and compare it to the replacement. For the round stay, confirm your pack is a listed Arc model or an Arc Haul Ultra if retrofitting. Trim only if the supplied length is longer than the original. Stop if the stay sleeve fabric is torn or if your pack model is not listed; choose a repair service or different part instead.
Parts that solve these symptoms
- Mini Cord Lock (5 pack): The hole is about 5 mm and fits two passes of cord up to 2.5 mm or 3/32-inch shock cord. Check your cord diameter and how many passes run through the lock before ordering, so the replacement grips properly.

Mini Cord Lock (5 pack) - Replacement Round Stay (M) - Vertical - 21.5": This 21.5-inch vertical round stay fits discontinued Arc Blast, Arc Zip, Arc Haul, and Arc Haul Zip packs and can be retrofitted into new Arc Haul Ultra packs. Matching the stay to your exact pack model avoids a loose fit or the need to trim, and retrofitting is possible only where listed.
